I am a Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California, Santa Barbara, specializing in Latin American and U.S. Latino literature and contemporary cultural studies.
BACKGROUND
I received my Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego in Comparative Literature and began my teaching career as a professor in the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. I returned to California in 1992 to teach at U.C. Santa Barbara.
My research and teaching focus on interdisciplinary approaches to the literature and culture of Latin America and the U.S. In addition to books on contemporary U.S. Latino writers, I have written a lengthy study of U.S. women's magazines and have just finished a book about the new textuality of literature on portable e-reading devices.
